How can I change the family

If you like to dissolve the au pair contract you have signed, normally you can do this with 14 days announcement. This period might differ from country to country. Please contact your local authorities to inform yourself which regulations apply to your country of residence (host country).

Au pairs

Before you decide to go to a family, try to get to know a lot about the expectations of the family. Tell them which ideas and suggestions you have. Nevertheless, the first weeks might not be very easy for you. Everything will be new to you. You will possibly be homesick. Try to talk about it with the family and give the family and yourself time to get used to each other.
Nevertheless, it might be possible that the family and you are a bad match. In this case you should try to talk to the family and tell them that you want to go to a different family. In most cases this is possible and will not cause a problem.
If you have a visa for the country, you must check with the aliens registration authority what you and the host family need to do so that you can stay in the country.

Families

It is not always easy for your temporary family member to settle into your family. At the beginning he/she will need your help until he/she knows what exactly he/she shall do and how your family and living arrangements work. Do not wait with your criticism until you are not able to bear the situation any longer. You should tell the au pair from the beginning what you expect of him/her while you are living together and what you do not like. Please be not sparing with praise for everything that worked positively.
If you are still on bad terms, you should help the au pair to find a new family. Even if you want to "get rid" of the au pair as soon as possible, you are responsible for this young person. In most cases things work out better after the notice because you as a family and the au pair know that it will end soon.

If the au pair comes from a country where a visa is required to go to the host country, the new host family must go to the aliens registration authority with the au pair in order to arrange the necessary formalities.
