If you wish to stay up to a maximum of 90 days, you need to apply for a short stay visa. If you wish to stay more than 3 months and up to a maximum of one year, you need to apply for a national visa (visto nazionale di lunga durata per motivi di lavoro subordinato). You will obtain your visa from the Italian Embassy in your home country prior to your entry in Italy. You should contact your local Italian Embassy to obtain more detailed information. Step 1: Check if you have a valid passportYou definitely need a valid passport to be able to apply for your visa. You should start applying as soon as possible. It can take several months until you have received a new passport. Step 2: Your host family applies for your work permit (autorizzazione al lavoro)Your host family applies for your work permit (autorizzazione al lavoro) at the employment office of their province of domicile (Ufficio Provinciale del Lavoro). Step 3: Your host family applies for your declaration of no objection (Nulla Osta)On receipt of the work permit, your future host family must apply for a declaration of no objection (Nulla Osta) at the immigration desk (Sportello Unico) of their local prefecture in charge. Step 4: Your host family sends you your work permit and declaration of no objectionThey will send you both documents by post so that you can apply for your visa. Step 5: You can apply for your visa at the Italian Embassy of your home countryPlease note: The work permit required for your visa application becomes invalid if you do not enter Italy within 6 months upon receipt of your work permit. Step 6: Register with the aliens department (Questura) in ItalyIn order to be a legal resident in Italy, you must register with the local aliens department in charge (Questura) within 8 days upon arrival in Italy.
