Aupair World's basic idea of au pairing

Our basic principal regarding the term Au Pair

Working as an au pair is the best way to learn a foreign language and culture. The au pair takes care of children and by doing so she learns the language and familiarizes herself with their culture.
Normally, young people who already have some basic language skills in a foreign language stay with a family for a certain period of time. During their stay they should be regarded as family members.

Tasks of an Au Pair

The duties of Au Pairs include taking care of the children (if necessary also domestic animals), light household work which is related to the child care. Preparing meals for the children, ironing, washing etc. The amount of pocket money that the au pair receives depends on a country where she works. Please click here to find au pair's working hours in your country.

An au pair's task is NOT: cleaning, ironing, taking care of elderly people, teaching languages, animal-sitting and she is not a harvest labourer.

In return for service - pocket money and other benefits

As benefits the au pair will receive

  • Board and Lodging, a room that is at least 9 square meters, has a window that can be opened and is heated, furnished and lockable.
  • Meals as commonly needed by any other family member (eating together with a host family, free acces to a fridge) etc.
  • Pocket money in accordance with the norm of the host country. Please click here to find out how much pocket money an au pair in your country normally gets.

Further costs

The host family also needs to take in consideration the following costs:

  • Health care insurance (liability insurance and a social security insurance) for the Au Pair (with the exception of: the UK and the USA.)
  • Possibly, an allowance for a  language course
  • A monthly ticket or a possibility to use the host family's car

Travel expenses of the Au Pair

The Au Pair always bares the costs of tickets (exception to this rule is the USA). We recommend to pay back the costs for the travel back of the Au Pair (50/100 %), if the Au Pair have spent at least 3 months with the host family and worked at least half of this time.

Sign a contract

The au pair and the host family should both make an agreeable contract. The necessary things which should be described are the mimimum and maximum time an au pair should work per day, the chores the Au Pair should perfom, the amount of the pocket money and additional payments due to extra working hours.

Please inform yourself
