Ireland

General requirements:

To become an au pair in Ireland, you should at least have basic knowledge of English and a school-leaving qualification.
It is an advantage if you have a driving license.

Age: 18 to 27

Duration of stay: An au pair normally stays 6 to 12 months in Ireland.

Working hours: 25 to 35 hours per week
The host family can ask the au pair to do some baby sitting up to 3 evenings per week.

Pocket money: app. 75 to 100 euro per week (depending on the number of working hours)

Holidays / spare time: The au pair is entitled to two days off per week and to one week of paid holidays per six months.

Language course: An au pair should have the opportunity to attend a language course. The costs for the language course need to be paid by the au pair herself/himself.

Administrative procedure:

For Au Pairs from the EU-member states:

Families living in the Republic of Ireland can only welcome au pairs from the EU or from Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Au pairs from these countries have to register only with the Irish police when they arrive, but do not need a work permit.

Working Holiday Program:

For citizens of Argentina, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea, it is also possible to apply for a Working Holiday visa. The number of visas is limited and there are certain application periods in which the visa can be applied for.

For further information please check the website of the Department of Foreign Affairs where you can also find links to your local embassy.

US citizens can go to Ireland by obtaining a Work & Travel visa. Please click here to find detailed information.

For Au Pairs from all other countries:

For au pairs coming from other countries, it is possible to obtain a student visa if the prospective applicant is registered to study English at an approved language school. A student may hold down a part-time job to support themselves whilst studying. Part-time cannot be more than 25 hours per week. However, the immigration officials at the entry point will always have the right to refuse entry should they believe the student is actually intending to work full-time.
