As from January, 28, 2008, au pairs applications must include the standard employment contract and the form Important information on rights and obligations for au pairs and their host families.
Further information about these changes you can find here.
Arrangement: The application for a work permit can take 3-6 months. It has to be arranged before going to Norway.
Length of stay: a work permit can be granted for a period of two years maximum.
Travel costs: The au pair must bear the travel costs to Norway herself/himself. If the host family wants to bear a part of the costs, it is advisable to do this after a successful stay of the au pair of at least 50% of the stipulated time.
Age: between 18 and 30 years.
Working hours: The au pair will have to work approximately 30 hours a week. In any case the au pair should not work more than 5 hours a day. The host family can request the au pair to do some additional baby-sitting once or twice a week.
Days off: Au-pairs are entitled to 48 hours free time every week, of which 24 hours must be uninterrupted. Every second week one free day shall be a Sunday, and public holidays are also off. The au pair shall have one regular free afternoon per week.
Holidays: Au pairs are entitled to 25 weekdays of holiday per calendar year.
Pocket money: about NOK 4000 per month
Taxes: must be paid from the amount of the au pairs' pocket money. The tax percentage is estimated by the au pairs' monthly salary and the value of food and lodge the au pair receives. The au pair has to be registered with the Tax Office.
Family requirements: The family has to be representative for Norwegian culture. The Norwegian language must be spoken as the main language in everyday life. If a family has the same nationality as an au pair, it is required that they have been living in Norway for at least 10 years.
By host family is meant a married couple with or without children, cohabitants regardless of gender with or without children or a single father or single mother with a child or children. Single persons without any children do not come under the definition of host family.
A host family may only welcome one au pair at the some time. The au pair lives together with the host family and has his/her own room.
Public transport: in addition to the pocket money the au pair receives NOK 400 monthly in tickets for the public transport (bus, train, underground railway etc).
Language courses: The au pair has to be given the opportunity to attend Norwegian language courses. The host family is also obliged to pay for such a course up to NOK 6 000 per year, including study material.
Au pair requirements: The au pair should have experience with children and a basic knowledge of English. The au pair will need a concrete offer of employment by a particular host family, represented by a contract of employment signed by the au pair and by the host family.
The au pair may not be a relative of the host family.
Period of notice: The contract is terminated if one of the parties has given a written notice period of 1 month.
Registration: The au pair has to be registerd with the local police office within 2 weeks after the arrival in order to receive a final residence permit.
Health insurance: The au pair will be covered by the Norwegian National Health Service during her stay. The host family shall ensure that the au pair is registered with the National Health Service.
Social security: The au pair has to be registered with the Social Registration Office in order to obtain a social security number.
Work permit: Young people who want to become an au pair in Norway have to apply for a work permit at the Norwegian embassy of their home country before going to Norway. The au pair is only allowed to enter Norway if he or she holds a valid work permit. A concrete job offer must have been made to the au pair before he or she applies, and the permit must be applied for and granted prior to entry into Norway.
The au pair therefore needs the following documents to submit an application at the Norwegin embassy of his/her home country:
-
a completed application form with passport photograph
-
a copy of a (valid) passport
-
the standard contract of employment for au pairs with information on the host family's nationality and a description of work tasks as a proof a the job offer
The au pair can obtain application forms from the Norwegian embassy or consulate in his or her home country. The embassy will forward the application to the Norwegian Immigration Directorate (UDI). Once the UDI has approved the application and granted the work permit, the au pair can make travel arrangements to go to the future host family in Norway. The application can take 3-6 months.
